Rep. Marlin Stutzman, R-3rd, was among 25 Republicans in the GOP-controlled House who voted against retaining Boehner as speaker last January. “To that end, I will resign the speakership and my seat in Congress on October. 30”.

Surprised Democrats saw disorder in the House GOP, with Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi calling Boehner’s resignation “seismic.”

“Speaker John Boehner was under constant attack from conservatives who thought he did not do enough and from liberals who thought he did too much”, Coffman said. “Nobody else around here has an obligation like that”, Boehner told reporters.

“I’m going to thank my family for putting up with this all these years”, he said.

“I think that the natives are restless and they want to see something change”.

Boehner said he had planned all along to announce in November that he was resigning at the end of this year, but had not said so publicly.

On Friday, Bost said Boehner’s departure offers Republicans a chance to regroup and find a way to overcome the gridlock that has enveloped Washington.

“I’m not here to bash anyone, but the time has come to turn the page and allow a new generation of leadership in this country”, he said. That’s why I’m not happy about what happened today. But he said some conservatives have unrealistic expectations and “somehow, along the way, if you don’t deal in absolutes, then you’re a RINO (Republican In Name Only)”.

To say John Boehner’s stint as the leader of the Republican Party has been rough is putting it mildly.

“I had to tell him five times because he didn’t believe me”, Boehner said.

Veteran Republican strategist Kevin Madden said Boehner may have served as an applause line for some of the candidates Friday, but that “voters aren’t going to be making their decision on our next nominee through the lens of a House leadership figure”. Unlike Boehner or previous Democratic speakers like Tom Foley of Washington or Jim Wright of Texas, McCarthy has never chaired a committee – and lacks a signature legislative accomplishment like the No Child Left Behind education law that Boehner help shepherd through Congress during President George W. Bush’s first term.

Later, he issued a statement that said now is the time for House Republicans “to focus on healing and unifying to face the challenges ahead”.

Rep. Kevin McCarthy has risen to the upper reaches of House leadership mostly on the basis of his people skills and political smarts rather than his policy chops. “If it’s somebody else, great”, Mulvaney added. “I certainly don’t want the institution to go through this”, he said.

Obama praised Boehner as “a good man” and a patriot. “I think it was inevitable”, Massie said.

Boehner made his announcement the day after meeting with members of the House Freedom Caucus, a group of hardliners dedicated to fighting for conservative principles at any cost. The 65 year old has been clashing with other conservatives in his party.

With his unnatural-looking tan, relaxed and sociable demeanor, love of golf and well-known tendency to cry in public, Boehner was widely popular among House Republicans.

Former Wisconsin Congressman Scott Klug says his close friend John Boehner had been talking about leaving his post as Speaker of the House for a while.

Boehner’s work is not yet done.

The Republican establishment repeatedly beat back conservative challenges in the 2014 midterm elections, helping to give their party control of both chambers of Congress. Conservatives have been deeply frustrated ever since, particularly as President Barack Obama enjoyed victories over congressional Republicans on health care, the Iran nuclear agreement and efforts to block federal funding to Planned Parenthood.

Senate Democrats blocked a bill this week that Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell pushed that would have stripped taxpayer money for Planned Parenthood, so he then set up a vote on a clean spending bill.

McCarthy has been a loyal lieutenant to Boehner, for instance, backing up the outgoing speaker’s plan to remove a controversy over “defunding” Planned Parenthood from a stopgap spending bill that’s needed to avoid a government shutdown next week.
