Somali militant leader, others killed in US drone strike

The mastermind behind the massacre of Christians at a Kenyan university was killed by a USA drone strike in Somalia early Thursday.

Airstrikes have killed at least two commanders of the al-Qaeda affiliated militant group al-Shabab near Somalia’s Bardhere town, as indicated by media reports.

He said he had mixed up the mastermind, known as Gamadheere, with the al-Shabab commander, named Jamaa Adhere.

Obonyo said Al-Shabaab fighters ambushed the soldiers after a vehicle they were travelling in hit a home-made bomb planted in the road in the township near Elade in Gedo region.

But in the past, the U.S military has carried out a series of drone missile strikes targeting al-Shabaab members. The bodies were found later, residents said, as stated by BBC.

The attack comes only six days before the USA president Barack Obama’s visit to the region.

United States drones have also killed Adan Garar, an Al-Shabaab leader who is believed to be the mastermind of the 2013 Westgate mall attack in Nairobi in which 70 people including several foreigners were killed.

‘We heard two big explosions and the information we are getting indicates that vehicles were targeted close to a Shebab military base, ‘ said Abdiwahab Ali, an elder at a village close to the scene.

A spokesman from the militants could not immediately be reached for comment.

He told the Anadolu Agency that the Kenyan military was pushing further into Somalia.

Nairobi Governor Evans Kidero cut a ribbon during the ceremony which came after two years of repairs from the damage caused by security forces battling four gunmen from Somalia’s al-Qaida-linked al-Shabab group in September 2013.

According to Kenya’s Ministry of Defense, 51 militants were killed during “artillery bombardment” by African Union (AU) forces.
