In the interview, which was recorded Friday and broadcast on Monday’s episode of The Nightly Show, Sanders – who, at one point, donned a “Black-Eyed Peas Matter” baseball cap – made his pitch to black voters. “We’ve also got to deal with real criminal justice reform”.
The segment comes as Sanders is trying to reach out to African-American voters, who will become a key component of the nomination fight following contests in Iowa and New Hampshire, which are largely white.
The Comedy Central host said Trump’s “Make America Great Again” hat was the thing, and gave Sanders a “Black Eyes Peas Matter” hat – since they were eating soul food.
“Yeah, I do”, Sanders said, explaining that the United States has much to learn from countries like Denmark, Sweden, Finland and Norway, where there is free healthcare and college education. “Is that what it means?”
Wilmore then asked Sanders whether he thought people were afraid of the word socialism. Plus, Wilmore taught Sanders about what “on fleek” means, and even got the presidential candidate to say: “My plans for criminal justice reform are on fleek”.
Wilmore asked if the senator would be comfortable with a “Weekend at Bernie’s situation” should the 74-year-old be elected and expire in office.
But “the Sanders campaign is even more progressive than Jackson’s was, because his critique of Wall Street is more direct”, West said in an interview last week.
“The good news is I’ve been blessed with good health”, Sanders said. Sanders and Wilmore had a regular Bro’s Night Out (BNO), during which they chowed down on soul food and talked about socialism (which is what I imagine all BNOs are like).
In the movie, two friends attempt to convince people their dead boss – who ordered their deaths – is still alive by putting dark sunglasses on his corpse.
Criminal justice reform was also a big topic of discussion, which Sanders has already been questioned about by members of the Black Lives Matter network.
