Australia’s Wade Ormsby has slipped back from one shot off the lead to be tied for fifth behind joint leaders Lee Slattery and Rafa Cabrera- Bello after the third round of the KLM Open.
Slattery is aiming for back-to-back European Tour wins after claiming the Russian Open last week.
The 37-year-old heads the field along with Cabrera-Bello of Spain on 16 under after shooting six birdies, an eagle and one bogey during his round.
Spaniard Cabrera-Bello hit an extraordinary six birdies and one eagle on the front nine, before parring the final nine holes to add a third round 63 to the rounds of 65 and 66 he posted earlier in the week.
Scotland’s 1999 British Open champion Paul Lawrie, 46, climbed the leaderboard with a 63 of his own to lie alone in third spot just one shot back on a day when birdies were in abundance at the Kennemer Golf and Country Club in northern Holland.
Young Belgian Thomas Pieters is a further stroke behind after handing in a best-of-the-day 62, with birdies at each of the first four holes and four in a five-hole span on the back nine.
“It’s like a dream come true at the minute”, said Slattery when asked about his golden run of form.
“I knew deep down that there are certain aspects of my golf swing I struggle with and I had to get stronger”, added Slattery who is ranked 197th in the world.
“I sank a very long putt on the first but then I felt that really all the other birdies were pretty much just tap ins and even the bogey I had was a three putt from five feet so…it could have actually been better”, Cabrera-Bello said. “Going into last week with a lot of pressure on and winning”.
