Silent Circle’s Blackphone 2 Landing In September

Blackphone 2 sports a 5.5-inch Gorilla Glass display – a bit larger than its predecessor, which has a 4.7-inch display. It also features a 13-megapixel camera, micro SD card support and a 1.7 GHz octo-core processor. Now, the second iteration, the Blackphone 2, is nearing release and has just been opened up for pre-orders.

Blackphone 2 will be launched in September this year and it is already available for pre-order. To protect its users, Silent Circle doesn’t have access to the encryption keys for communications made on its network, similar to how Apple protects data stored on its users’ iPhones. The company received negative feedback from rival BlackBerry Ltd (NASDAQ:BBRY) (TSE:BB), which claimed Silent Circle’s phone isn’t good enough for enterprise customers. However, as noted in an article at Tech 2, the first version of the phone cost a hefty $629, which leads many to believe this updated version will top that price tag.

There’s no further word on the other device Silent Circle has in the works: a tablet, with the unfortunately clumsy moniker: Blackphone+, also announced back in March. It’s still based on Google Android, but now there’s support for “spaces”, which lets you create up to four different profiles on one device without any data being shared between them.

The Blackphone 2’s operating system will have built-in pro-privacy apps like Silent Circle’s suite of secure messaging apps and “SpiderOak” secure cloud storage.

To ensure security, Blackphone is preloaded with its own apps and third party apps that encrypt communication, including “Silent Phone”, “Silent Text” and “Smarter WiFi”.

Users can also create multiple “virtual phones” on the Blackphone 2.
