Showtime has given the ax to dark comedy Happyish after one season, the network confirmed to USA TODAY.
Showtime’s Happyish will not be coming back.
The comedy series stars British actor Steve Coogan as Thom Payne, a 44-year-old man whose world is thrown into disarray when his 25-year-old “wunderkind” boss arrives, saying things like “digital”, “social” and “viral”. It was ordered to pilot in summer 2013 with Philip Seymour Hoffman and Kathryn Hahn as the leads.
But the series, described as a comedic, soul-searching examination of our pursuit of happiness, received lukewarm reception by critics and did not connect with viewers, drawing lackluster ratings, leading to Showtime brass’ decision to redirect its resources elsewhere. Bradley Whitford and Ellen Barkin joined as new cast members for the pilot reshoot.
Given that it lasted a mere season on the air, Happyish certainly had something of a troubled history in its short life-span.
The cancellation comes a month after the series ended its 10-episode first season. Shortly after production on the second pilot was completed, Showtime once again handed Happyish a series order.
