Severed human legs found near New Haven, Conn., train tracks

Police are investigating after a pair of human legs were found near the State Street Railroad Station in New Haven.

Pablo Rivera, of New Haven, said at the scene Wednesday that he and his friend reported their discovery of the legs to New Haven police Tuesday but said he thinks they did not believe him.

It’s unclear how long the remains had been there or whether they even belong to the same person.

Police said they cannot identify the race, gender or age of the victim at this time. Rivera said he saw the legs had socks on the feet but no shoes. They were severed at about mid-calf.

“We do not, at this point, know if there are other body parts that are in the same area”, Hartman said Wednesday.

WFSB reports the remains were found along a fence in thick foliage.

Police say they will check through missing persons cases locally and from around the area in an attempt to find a match.

A spokeswoman for the Office of the Chief State Medical Examiner said late on Wednesday it is taking part in the investigation, but could provide no further details.

No other body parts have been located by police.

Court Street was shut down at State Street while police investigated shortly after noon.

State Street is closed northbound between Chapel Street and Grand Avenue. Near that fence is where the bottom part of two human legs were found. He said the area where the legs were found is remote and was likely being used as a homeless encampment before the discovery.

This story will be updated as more information becomes available.
