Eight people were transported to the hospital after an ammonia leak was reported at the Brentwood Recreation Center Tuesday morning.

A line to an ammonia tank broke while contractors were working.

There are also four patients at Mercy Hospital, three of which are firefighters. None of the injuries appear to be life-threatening.

Ammonia can burn skin and be toxic, even fatal, if inhaled.

Authorities say the leak at the ice rink has been contained and that crews have now cleared the building. The leak is located at a 2500 S. Brentwood Blvd. The chemical is frequently used as a refrigerant at ice rinks. The complex reopened September 5, and workers were checking the system when the leak was discovered, said Ben Von Harz, a Brentwood project manager. The ice rink will be closed for 48 hours while the ice returns to a normal temperature.
