Sean Couturier: Inks Six-Year Deal With Flyers

Sean Couturier has signed a six year deal worth $26 million dollars to secure his long term future with the Philadelphia Flyers.

The Flyers have at least one major contract extension out of the way.

Courturier’s new contract comes with year left on his existing deal, which pays $1.75 million annually. His 287 games played also rank first among all players in his 2011 draft class. Couturier has also added four points (3g-1a) in 18 career Stanley Cup Playoff games. Following the season, Couturier helped lead Team Canada to the gold medal at the 2015 IIHF World Championships where he recorded three goals and added four assists for seven points in 10 games.

Couturier was a solid offensive contributor for the Flyers in 2014-15, tallying 37 points (15 goals, 22 assists) in 82 games with the team.

Earlier this summer, Flyers general manager Ron Hextall hinted he believes Couturier will take the next step in his development under new head coach Dave Hakstol. He has also grown into a strong two-way player, often getting tougher defensive assignments. The selection was acquired, along with Jakub Voracek and a third-round choice (Nick Cousins), as part of the Jeff Carter trade to Columbus in the summer of 2011. He’s coming off a season where he recorded his highest goal totals since hitting the National Hockey League, and posted absolutely insane possession driving numbers for his team despite playing in a severely limited role. Now just two games away from the 200 mark, he actually has the third longest streak behind Voracek and Schenn according to CSN Philly.the other two free agents that the Flyers are yet to re-sign.
