All sides appeared to be satisfied Monday with the way the clerk’s office is handling marriage licenses in Kentucky’s Rowan County. As a result, she was held in contempt of court and jailed on September 3, for defying court orders by refusing to sign marriage licenses to couples in Rowan County.

When Davis was behind bars, deputy clerks issued licenses. She was back at work Monday, but still defiant. “I, too, have great doubts whether the license issued under these conditions are even valid”.

Remember Kentucky is in the U.S., with President Obama being one of the greatest proponents of gay rights of our times.

The governor, the attorney general and the county attorney have said the licenses are valid. But if the documents are altered to remove Davis’ name and title, a court may have to rule on their validity. Reporter: And then – the first test. Davis staying inside her office, door closed, curtains drawn as Shannon and Carmen wampler-collins, together for 23-year-olds, got their license to Wednesday.

“And I certainly don’t want to be a whipping post”, Davis said, reading from a hand-written statement outside the courthouse where she works.

“For me, this would be an act of disobedience to my God“, she said.

In the ongoing battle with the state, Mat Staver and Kim Davis have been asking for an exemption to be made for the clerk’s legal authority, excusing her alone from issuing same-sex marriage licenses since they contradict her religious convictions. They say without the clerk’s name and because she didn’t authorize them, the licenses issued in the last week are invalid.

Including the license issued Monday, the clerk’s office has issued 11 licenses since Davis went to jail September 3. Those couples have a right to marry, whatever her views.

After her arrest, five out of her six deputy clerks agreed to issue marriage licenses despite lacking Davis’ authorization.

She did nothing to strengthen traditional marriage, as gay marriage takes nothing away from men and women who can marry just as they always did.

On Friday, Davis’ attorneys filed an appeal seeking another delay in issuing licences.

Planting Peace said they will leave the billboard up for a month. But he’s refused so far, and the legislature doesn’t meet again until January.

Crowds of supporters gathered outside of the Rowan County Clerks Office before it opened at 8 a.m., cheering on Davis, welcoming her back. She said the conflict between her conscience and the directive issued by Judge Bunning forced her to “fashion a remedy”. “All I can say is that I am amazed and very grateful”.
