RM Sotheby’s sets several records at Monterey auction

The highest bid was an incredible $17.6 million for a 1964 Ferrari 250 LM.

If the total stands, it’ll officially be a record for the highest grossing collector auto auction of all time and marks a 20 percent jump on the company’s 2014 performance.

Headlining the sale was a 1959 Ferrari 250 GT Competizione Alloy Berlinetta, with coachwork by Scaglietti and design by Pinin Farina, that achieved $8.5 million.

Canadian auction house RM Sotheby’s moved $67 million in cars across the block this past week at an event during Monterey vehicle week in Monterey, California, breaking several auction records in the process, including the record for biggest single-day auction of a private collection. It had been estimated at more than $12 million. However, the marque decided on producing one final example and created it as a gift to His Holiness Pope John Paul II. The pope never drove the auto, but sold it for charity.

Other incredible amounts included a $3.3 million bid for a 1967 Ferrari 275 GTB/4, another $3.3 million bid for a 1994 Ferrari F40 LM, a $2.75 million bid for a 1972 Ferrari 365 GTS/4 Daytona Spyder, and finally a $2.42 million bid for a 1985 Ferrari 288 GTO, which like the Enzo mentioned above is one of Ferrari’s prized “Special Series” models.

A Koenigsegg CCXR that appeared in the movie “Fast Five” sold for $825,000. Public sales continue through August 16 at RM Sotheby’s, Gooding & Co. and Bonhams.

The enormous total led the Concours d’Elegance auctions and shows in Pebble Beach, California, which this year offers up $400 million worth of classic and vintage cars over the week.
