Redskins, LB Kerrigan agree to multi-year contract extension

“For them to give me this kind of vote of confidence to hopefully finish my career out as a Redskin means the world to me”.

“I’m looking forward to getting out there tomorrow and knocking off the rust”, said Kerrigan, a 2011 first-round draft pick who has started every game during his four NFL seasons.

The Central graduate and former Purdue Boilermaker told his agent and the team’s front office that he wanted to stay with the Washington Redskins, the team that drafted him in 2011.

The 6-foot-4, 260-pound Kerrigan ranked second in the NFC last season with a career-high 13 1/2 sacks for the Redskins, who went 4-12 and finished last in their division for the sixth time in seven years.

He has 38 sacks, 15 forced fumbles and two interceptions – both returned for touchdowns. Orakpo signed with the Tennessee Titans.

Kerrigan was named to the Pro Bowl in 2012.

Coach Jay Gruden characterized the contract as a reward for Kerrigan’s production over the years and praised his work ethic and the example that he sets for younger players.

Hyde will be counted upon to carry the load following franchise rushing leader Frank Gore’s departure.

“It’s going to start in training camp right now, Day 1, what we expec”.

The team announced Wednesday that Hyde is now active.

Veterans report Friday to Santa Clara headquarters with the first practice Saturday night at Levi’s Stadium. Had he not signed his extension, Kerrigan would have been a free agent following the conclusion of the 2015 season, but now he enters training camp knowing with certainty he has a longer future in Washington. That sack total tied Ken Harvey (1994) for the most by a Redskins linebacker in a single season.

– Moses, a second-year tackle, was held out of the majority of the team’s offseason workout program after undergoing foot surgery for an injury suffered in practice towards the end of last season.
