Redskins acquire TE Derek Carrier from 49ers

Derek Service, as soon as a robust candidate to function the 49ers’ prime tight finish behind Vernon Davis, as an alternative obtained traded Friday to Washington.

The 25-year-old Carrier caught nine passes for 105 yards last season with the 49ers.

The 49ers and Washington were logical trade partners: San Francisco has a tight end surplus and Washington has lost two of their top tight ends – Niles Paul and Logan Paulsen – to season-ending injuries this summer.

The healthy tight ends on the Redskins’ roster now are Carrier, Chase Dixon, Je’Ron Hamm, Devin Mahina and D.J. Williams, who was added to the team as a free agent August 16.

Three days after trading tight-end Asante Cleveland to the Patriots, the 49ers have made another deal.

Carrier played his collegiate ball at Beloit College and was a major offense weapon for the Buccaneers.

“We have to have the best tight-end group in the league”. “He simply must proceed doing what doing, studying soccer, and never carry a rustic on his again and never carry a flag for crossover athletes”, Tomsula stated. Conditions in such trades are generally based on playing time, and with the Redskins Carrier should become an immediate contributor.

Carrier (6-4, 241) appeared in 16 games (one start) over the past two seasons with San Francisco. He was initially assigned a No. 47 jersey Saturday, the same number as former Washington tight end and current radio analyst Chris Cooley, who has been openly campaigning on the air to play for the Redskins again.

It’s unclear what the Saints tried to offer for Carrier but it was likely along the lines of a sixth or seventh round pick considering he went undrafted. “Every chance you’re given, you’ve got to seize it”.
