Rangers land Hamels in trade with Phillies

Jon Heyman of CBS Sports confirms that the Rangers have agreed to a deal to acquire Cole Hamels from the Phillies. Rangers pitcher Matt Harrison, who is owed $28 million dollars over the next two years, is reportedly coming back to Philly as well in what could possibly be a salary dump. For Hamels, he will immediately be the ace of Texas’ staff for the rest of the season with his career 3.30 ERA and 8.6 K/9 rate. He is signed at $22.5 million per season through 2018, with a $20 million team option for ’19. If a deal would occur, Hamels has a no-trade clause in his contract; therefore, Hamels, 31, would have to approve of the potential location he would be moved to. The trade has been made for the 2016 season, but with the Texas Rangers only 4.5 games back of the second wild-card position, they could still make the playoffs entering Wednesday. Jake Diekman is 2-1 with a 5.15 ERA, 1.60 WHIP, .268 BAA in 36.2 IP.

Finally, Jerad Eickhof, a 25-year-old right-hander, is ranked by MLB.com as the No. 17 prospect in Texas’ farm system. Per Evan Grant of the Dallas Morning News, Hamels is headed to Texas along with lefty setup man Jake Diekman in exchange for veteran southpaw starter Matt Harrison and five prospects.

The Rangers have not yet confirmed the trade.

Alfaro, sixth in organization and 69th overall, had his 2015 campaign at Double-A cut short due to an ankle injury that required season-ending surgery. He’s batting. 299 with 13 home runs, 45 RBIs and 10 stolen bases in 96 games in Double-A.

Williams, a 21-year-old left-handed hitter, was the Rangers’ second-round pick in 2012.

Despite the steep price, the Rangers were able to hang on to three of their most coveted prospects, including Joey Gallo, Nomar Mazara and Chi Chi Gonzalez. He has not been very good, but he did look good in Colorado July 21.
