The San Diego Union-Tribune adds that Qualcomm has already given its notice of 60-days on Thursday, September 17, 2015.

There was initially no word on exactly how many employees would be laid off in San Diego, although the number was expected to be in the thousands.

Qualcomm revealed plans to slash its 31,300 global workforce by 15% in July and cut expenses by $1.4B annually. It also has dozens of other location scattered throughout the US and the globe.

The force reduction is just one facet of Qualcomm’s “Strategic Realignment Plan” that was announced in July. Accordingly it has chose to cut its temporary staff, and is now notifying those unfortunate employees. “A lot of what we are doing this year is repositioning the company’s resources so we can continue to deliver on the phone opportunity but more importantly deliver on these new opportunities”. “Our Strategic Realignment Plan is designed to drive meaningful change in the near term – without jeopardizing our ability to retain and build upon our technology leadership position and create long-term value for our stockholders”.

“We underwent a thorough assessment to determine which roles and skill-sets will be needed to best support the future business”, Qualcomm told Fox 5 San Diego.

A statement by Qualcomm president Derek Aberle says the company is providing outplacement help and severance packages.

Further details were not available at this time.

The San Diego Union-Tribune said that Qualcomm has been struggling this year following the loss of its key chips in the Galaxy S6, Samsung’s newest flagship smartphone.

Apparently, the chipmaker has taken to letting employees go, as it readjusts to the slow growth in smartphone market, driven by maturing market.

On Thursday, Amazon (AMZN – Get Report) chose a MediaTek processor for its Fire TV over a Qualcomm component it had previously used, Bloomberg reports.
