Pro tip: You can sprint in Everybody’s Gone to the Rapture

However, player testers from Santa Monica Studios suggested that the auto-sprint should be replaced with an R2 trigger hold. “And we’re really sorry about that”, said Dan Pinchbeck, co-founder of developer The Chinese Room, in a new blog post.

Everybody’s Gone To The Rapture was released today on PlayStation Network, from the creators of Amnesia: A Machine For Pigs and Dear Esther. However, the style of game that The Chinese Room has created over the past few years (one that is light on gameplay and heavy on story) will inherently have critics split down the middle anyways.

“A couple of weeks before the game went to final, Santa Monica did a last round of playtesting”. It didn’t matter about the speed, it was the psychology, the choice. We’ve tested the run button in game and it works as advertised, though there’s quite a lag between pressing the button and getting going to just keep R2 held down. All this took time.

“Suddenly launch was right on top of us, and something had been missed”, Pinchbeck says. However, since the replacement was made so close to launch, the controller icon in the options menu was missing the sprint instruction, and it hadn’t been localized.

We’re still waiting on a review copy of the game, but we’ll be sure to bring you our full review once we’re able.

Taking this suggestion into consideration, the developer made the change in controls, but in doing so also required to perform additional testing in order to prevent game-breaking glitches resulting from the manual sprint function. “Hopefully it didn’t spoil the experience too much for you, and knowing you can get around faster if you need to will make you want to return to explore more”.

Everybody’s Gone to the Rapture is out this week exclusively on PS4 and it’s an utterly unique adventure about trying to find out what happened in a small English town when all of the inhabitants disappeared.
