New Jersey transportation officials gave the warning Thursday that more than one third of the two million people going to Philadelphia for the World Meeting of Families on the weekend of September 26 and 27 are expected to travel through New Jersey.
City officials outlined three layers of security to protect the pope and the swarms of pedestrians expected, along with timelines for when traffic restrictions go into effect.
Road closures are also planned, but Route 95 will be open.
Since buses will be parking along the Camden waterfront, it’s expected that more groups will be electing to walk over the bridge into Philadelphia rather than crowd PATCO commuter trains that will already be running on a special schedule with fewer stops.
– The Ben Franklin Bridge between Camden and Philadelphia will be closed at 10 p.m. Friday, September 25 through noon Monday, September 28.
During the Papal visit, “the City of Camden will basically be a mass transit hub”, said Captain Albert Handy of the Camden County Police Department. While in the nation’s capital, Pope Francis will also canonize missionary Father Junipero Serra, whose activity paved the way for Catholicism in parts of Mexico and what is now the state of California, according to Mission San Diego. Afterward, trains will run back to Atlantic City on the hour starting at 10 p.m. Saturday and 6 p.m. Sunday.
The two fenced-in perimeters will be the hotbeds of activity.
The mayor said a copy of the map he unveiled will be posted online within 24 hours.

In addition to the River Line, the Atlantic City Rail Line will run on an express schedule with no intermediate stops between Philadelphia and Atlantic City. Seven handicap-accessible taxis, along with city paratransit vehicles, will help transport the disabled and elderly.
At 8 a.m., traffic will be forced off previously announced emergency vehicle access routes within the larger traffic box, where vehicles are not allowed to re-enter if they leave.
Nineteen-year-old college student Jennifer D’Angelo will be in school when Pope Francis visits her hometown, the AP reported, so she took the opportunity to pose with a two-dimensional cutout of the pope on display at a food court.
Concerns range from how and when deliveries can be made, how staffers will get to work and how to get guests to hotels near or on the Parkway.
People planning to travel into Philadelphia for the weekend events – including the Sunday afternoon Mass on the Benjamin Franklin Parkway – should be prepared to walk significant distances.
“Our collective role is to reduce the difficulties businesses face as much as we can”, he said.
Nutter encouraged people living within the security zones to plan ahead by shopping for groceries and filling prescriptions before the fencing starts to go up.
