One of the injured women, Shameka Johnson, 40, died at hospital. Paul Kieu/AP Firefighters work on the scene at the Sunset Mini Mart convenience store where a standoff with police occurred Wednesday.
Police in Louisiana say an officer was killed Wednesday when he responded to a call from a house where three women had been stabbed, one of them fatally. Now the state is tied with Texas-having the highest number of law enforcement deaths in the country for 2015.
Shameka Johnson, 41, also died Wednesday. Guidroz says Riley is being held for observation after complaining of a hurt rib.
The suspect, who has an extensive criminal history, was taken to a Lafayette hospital, Guidroz said. He allegedly had methadone, crack cocaine and morphine in his possession and used them in front of a child under 17, according to court records.
Riley had been living in Arnaudville with Jolivette, according to Guidroz.
Sunset Police Chief Luis Padilla told the Associated Press that the suspect and all the victims were related. He was treated by Acadian Ambulance medics for c-gas burns and irritation to the face and eyes after being taken into custody. He is in the St. Landry Parish jail facing two first-degree murder charges among others. Riley was a cousin of Nelson and the Johnson sisters, he said.
Truong says her parents were not in the store, and the man went into an office and closed the door.
“I’m in another world with this”, the woman added, declining to give her name.
“We are more of a family here than coworkers”, Monroe said. “I’ve been FBI 30 years, Chief of Police nearly 14 years and I’ve never quite seen it like this”, he said.
“We were confused”, James said Thursday. Court documents show she married Riley past year.
DiCapo identified the officer as Henry Nelson, 52. Starting salaries on the force are around $1,200 per month, he said.
“Nothing made him mad. Even when he arrested someone, he had a smile”.
The officer still lived in the tin-roofed house with peeling paint where he was reared in Sunset. Her sister Surlay Johnson, 34, was in critical condition.
