Officers attempted to speak to the man, but he ran behind a garage on the property and refuse to talk, according to the news release.
Sgt. Philip Hensley says the shooting occurred about 4 p.m. Friday after a state trooper and a West Baden police officer responded to a report of a man strangling his wife in French Lick.
The names of the officers involved and the victim have not yet been released.
Police tried to subdue the suspect by firing a stun gun, but the suspect continued to approach them. Officers again attempted to speak with Damiani, who would not converse with officers.
State Police say the West Baden officer fired his Taser, but it didn’t stop Damiani.
“They tell him numerous times, drop the pipe, drop the pipe, drop the pipe”, Hensley said.
Police say Damiani then stepped directly up to the officer with the metal pipe, pulling the pipe back in a motion to strike the officer in the head with it. At that point, police say Trooper Allen fired his handgun at the male, striking him. Officers fired the weapons. “Officers then open fire on the subject because they felt the situation had taken a grave turn”. The man was pronounced dead at the scene by the Orange County Coroner.
Police are continuing to investigate.
Police have not yet said what will happen to the officer.
