A news release sent by District Attorney General Russell Johnson to NewsChannel 9 on Thursday afternoon announces the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation is looking into the case, and provides new details.

Investigators believe a fight over a fighting rooster ended with a man shooting his uncle to death.

District Attorney Johnson says at just after 2 a.m. Wednesday morning, deputies were called to 280 Moore Cemetery Road in Decatur.

Killed in a hail of gunfire was Timothy Dewayne Johnson, 52, whose body was found in the driveway of his nephew’s home.

According to the DA’s office, when Timothy Johnson went to the house to retrieve the rooster, which was unharmed, the argument escalated outside of the home.

The dead man’s nephew, 27-year-old Larry E. Johnson Jr., was also shot.

Larry then claimed he retreated towards one of the mobile homes, firing back at Timothy with a gun he brought with him, hitting and killing Timothy. The nephew, who survived a gunshot to the chest, was airlifted to UT Medical Center and is in critical condition.
