North Florida highway closed after suspect shoots at trooper

Authorities are searching for an armed suspect who fired at the trooper, who was assisting a motorist in a disabled vehicle, the Florida Highway Patrol says.

The trooper was uninjured during the incident that unfolded at about 8:30 a.m. local time, Alachua County Sheriff spokesman Art Forgey said. The search includes the Alachua County S.W.A.T. team as well as officers and agents from Gainesville P.D., Florida Wildlife Commission and the Florida Department of Law Enforcement.

Reports said the trooper was not injured.

A perimeter was established and troopers believe they’ve contained the gunman within the perimeter.

A man was found dead and Interstate 75 was shut down in both directions for hours on Saturday after an exchange of gunfire near the Micanopy exit.

FHP is asking drivers heading nothbound to exit in Marion County before heading into Alachua County.

No word yet as to how long the road will remain closed.
