As for how neighboring states fared, Virginia ranked the second best overall with Tennessee coming in at 34 and South Carolina at 46.

Leigh said that in order for the state to improve their rankings, they must make themselves more competitive compared to states like South Carolina and Virginia. North Carolina schools are home to just the 33-best pupil-to-teacher ratio in America, giving some credence to educators’ claim that teacher aides are vital to students’ success. The center found the average annual salary for the 3.5 million full-time teachers in the United States was about $56,400 in 2013. She also said teachers who are tenured should have more pay due to their years being in the system.

Past year the Tarheel state was ranked 51.
