Nissan Leaf To Get 110-Mile Range

Nissan Leaf To Get 110-Mile Range

It’s not uncommon at all for Nissan to bring executives from its various dealers into a special event where they are told about upcoming Nissan products.

Certain models of the 2016 Nissan Leaf will get up to 110 miles of all-electric range.

Unless Nissan adds a new top-of-the-range version, those “higher trim levels” are the Leaf SV and the more luxurious Leaf SL.

That is certainly the case with a Nissan dealer from Indiana who allegedly went to one of these events and spilled the beans on an option for the 2016 Nissan Leaf. The current-generation Leaf uses a 24-kilowatt-hour battery pack and has a range of 135 km or 84 miles.

The 110-mile Leaf could arrive on the market before the end of this year.

While an incrementally larger battery has been expected for the 2016 Leaf for some time now, a choice of pack sizes (and hence ranges) fleshes out the picture a bit, if true. However, the dealer did confirm that there will be a new battery for higher trim levels with an increased range (even if this increase is not yet definite).

While that kind of evolution in pack design might seem like a major breakthrough, Nissan, like Tesla and other electric automakers, is nearly continually refining the cell chemistry and design of its electric vehicle battery packs. However, there is one problem with the Leaf and that is its electrical driving range.

The dealership also didn’t announce pricing or availability yet and we shall see whether Nissan charges significantly more for the larger battery in a segment that’s becoming more competitive.
