A new update to the Google Maps iOS application promises to make it easier to navigate when it’s dark outside, potentially reducing the risk associated with using the app while behind the wheel. This means the screen usually switches from bright maps to darker ones, creating less of a distraction from your handset that is displaying directions as you drive. It’s already possible for anyone to add new places to the map through the iOS app, but these were only for public places and, if approved, would be seen by everyone using the app. The new labels are private, intended to make it easier to find and navigate to places that matter to you.
The latest Google Maps iOS update, then, brings some handy additions.
This feature is also entirely automatic, so you won’t have to change your phone’s settings in order to switch it on and off. Instead, the Night Mode will only activate when it is actually nighttime outside, and not just when its dark.
Anyone who’s used Google Maps in the dark knows how tough it can be on the eyes.
Other additions include the ability to label places to see them on your map and in search suggestions, as well as the ability to edit your posted photo captions. Also, Night Mode is the current build and there isn’t a way to turn off this feature.
Basically, all that needs to be done is to update your device to the latest version of Google Maps, thus the enhancement will appear precisely when you need it, all in all.
It is also only available in the turn-by-turn navigation mode, and not the default maps interface.
