Casper’s Josh Hartman caught his first TD pass of the year, a 26-yarder in the 4th quarter.
New Mexico’s Lamar Jordan (13) avoids Wyoming defender Eric Nzeocha… Senior quarterback Cameron Coffman paced the Cowboys with 30/42 passing, 366 passing yards, four touchdowns, and two interceptions. The completions, attempts, yards and TD passes were all season highs for him.
Jordan was involved with two – a 56-yard touchdown run and a 64-yard TD pass. “For the most part we did that”.
In this high-scoring affair, it was the cherry and silver who were able to capitalize on big plays. “We really tried to tackle him really low”. We will keep believing and keep working. “The most pleasant thing was we got back to doing what we do”.
New Mexico did that and then some on Saturday afternoon.
LARAMIE, Wyo. (AP) – New Mexico quarterback Lamar Jordan knows the value of big offensive plays in a football game.
But New Mexico’s defense limited Wyoming to just 42 yards on the ground. Cam Coffman connected with Tanner Gentry on this pass play in the second half. But on a fourth down at the New Mexico 21-yard line, Coffman was sacked for a loss of four yards and the ball went back to the Lobos on downs.
“I was nervous about this game”, Davie said.
Senior Shaun Wick, who boasts 2,179 career rushing yards, ran five times for minus-2 yards.
“We aren’t going to quit”. “We’ve got to be ready for it next week”. “That’s the nature of this team, to keep fighting every day”.
For a team with a run-first, pro-style offense, Wyoming sure appeared awfully pass-happy in its 38-28 loss to New Mexico on Saturday at War Memorial Stadium.
It looked like that might be the halftime margin, but on the final drive of the first half the Cowboys put themselves back in the game. Jordan and Jhurell Pressley (17 rushes for 103 yards), among others, ran the ball with great success and the triple-option kept the Cowboys’ defense on their toes.
Wyoming’s heralded sophomore running back Brian Hill struggled with only 49 rushing yards on 18 carries.
The Cowboys would answer with another sustained drive going 75 yards in eight plays.
“Offense, we put it on the table”, said Jordan, who rushed and passed for 254 yards and two touchdowns. On the 11-yard TD reception, Gentry was originally ruled out off bounds by the officials.
Wyoming’s defense forced a three-and-out on the Lobos next series. However, Coffman unraveled in the fourth quarter when he threw two interceptions that stalled any hope of a Cowboy comeback. The Lobos did just that with 302 rushing yards and three touchdowns 43 yards or longer. Meanwhile, the Cowboys ran the ball 30 times.
The Lobos better their record to 2-2 overall and 1-0 in MW play.
Wyoming is on the road at Boone, North Carolina next week to play Appalachian State in the heart of the Blue Ridge Mountains.
