Walking home alone at night can be scary. That’s why thousands are flocking to this new app that gives you a companion to walk you home.

The app is now free, but according to Business Insider, the founders work with universities to make money, the goal being to get schools to use their app as a primary safety tool on campus. With the help of Companion, users will be able to easily request for a friend to accompany him or her virtually, keeping track of your whole journey from start to end via Global Positioning System on an online map. The other person doesn’t even need to have the app installed.

After the user sends a request to a friend or family member, those contacted will then receive a text message that will send them to a web page with an interactive map showing the user walking to their destination.

“Companion” keeps a close eye on you by monitoring even the little things such as a trip, a fall or your headphones being pulled out.

If the app detects changes in movement, it asks the user if they’re OK.

If they do not confirm that they are alright within 15 seconds, or a real emergency is taking place, the phone will begin to blast loud noises to scare criminals from the scene and give the tracker the immediate option of calling the police. That information is compiled for security and law enforcement.

“We’ve had a lot of people outside the USA downloading the app”, co-founder Lexie Ernst told the worldwide Business Times.
