The updates include modifications to its design, as well as predictive analytics. “Millions of Nest homes around the world have saved approximately four billion kilowatt hours of energy compared to what they would have used if they’d left their thermostats at a consistent temperature”. Nest says it’s also brighter and squeezes in more pixels. And this 3rd generation of the Google Nest thermostat also comes with WiFi radio included in its many impressive features.

But the market is still growing rapidly.

Is it going to sway the nay-sayers, and make everyone get a smart thermostat?

The menu looks about the same as the old Nest.

Nest’s new thermostat will also integrate with Nest Protect and Nest Cam just as first- and second-generation Nest thermostats do, providing emergency notifications when it detects smoke or carbon monoxide, helping the thermostat better understand when you’re home and when you’re away, and the ability to automatically record when the Nest thermostat is put in Home or Away mode.

Nest is introducing a new version of the Nest Thermostat today that has a bigger, higher-resolution display and a slimmer build. The thermostat otherwise hasn’t changed much: it’s still shaped like a hockey puck with a circular display in the center.

Updates on possible furnace problems? The thermostat will run those diagnostics twice annually. The third generation Nest Thermostat will be available at 7,000 retail locations, 25,000 Nest Pro installers, and through energy and enterprise partners such as Southern, Direct Energy, SunEdison, Infinite Energy, Reliant and ADT, which provide it at a discount or no cost.

The latest Nest has managed to lose some girth making it thinner than ever.

A week ago we reported that Google’s, err, Alphabet’s Nest had a new smart thermostat in the works per FCC filings, and today Nest is ready to unveil its 3rd-gen Learning Thermostat. It still lets you control all of it from your smartphone thanks to WiFi and Bluetooth LE connectivity. Pulse is powered by Icontrol, which added Nest to its ecosystem of more than 100 products past year. To save energy, the Nest’s screen shuts off unless it detects motion. Also at “select retailers” the 2nd generation Nest will be bumped down to $199 “while supplies last”.
