A group of women’s rights activists held a protest outside the Saudi Arabian embassy demanding action against one of its diplomats who allegedly confined and raped two Nepalese women at his flat in Gurgaon today.

The women, aged 30 and 50 have registered a complaint with Indian police alleging the Saudi diplomat beat and sexually assaulted them while they were imprisoned in his apartment outside the Indian capital.

The Saudi official has diplomatic immunity and his embassy has denied the claims, saying it “strongly stresses that these allegations are false and have not been proven”.

Police said in a statement on Thursday they had sent the details of their investigation to the foreign ministry and had sought its advice on how to proceed. Police in Gurgaon, where the abuse allegedly occurred, told The Huffington Post that a medical examiner inspected the women on Wednesday and confirmed evidence of sexual assault. The Saudi envoy protested against the police entering the house of a Saudi diplomat which he said was against the Vienna Convention.

Indian police said on Wednesday, two Nepalese maids have accused a Saudi embassy official of raping and torturing them at his home near New Delhi.

India’s foreign ministry on Thursday summoned Ambassador Saud bin Mohammed Al-Saty to relay a request from police for cooperation while they investigate the case, spokesman Vikas Swarup said.

It is highly unlikely that the Saudi government will make a u-turn on its stance with regard to its diplomat.

The raid took place after the police received a letter from the Nepal embassy about the womens’ plight. “We are here to know the development”, said Rajendra Man Shrestha, a counsellor at the Nepal Embassy, after the meeting.

The police requested the MEA to inform it about any global or other protocols to be followed in such cases. We have strong ties with both Nepal and Saudi Arabia. He found them in an unconscious state in his Etios vehicle when he was planning to go to police station to report his missing daughters.

“We are awaiting further instructions from MEA who now have to guide and assist us to carry out this investigation further”.
