A family member said there was a small yard waste fire burning in what fire officials described as a portable outdoor fire pit.

Officials said it is still unclear how close Carr and her granddaughter, Emily Hinton, were standing to the fire.

Amy Hinton said, “It was an accident- please pray for our baby, it’s going to take a miracle”.

“The gas can, she didn’t even see where it was, and she doesn’t know where it happened, but sparks flown up and landed on it and ignited it, and that’s when it exploded”, said family friend Denise Mckellar.

“Emily is facing months of Hospitalization and a life time of surgeries”.

An infant was rushed to the hospital with potentially life-threatening injuries after being badly burned.

Neighbors told WBTV they heard a “loud boom”, but didn’t realize there had been an explosion.

A one-year-old girl suffered severe burns in an explosion at a north Charlotte home Tuesday evening. She just celebrated her first birthday in July.

Police say initial indications point to this being an accident and not the result of foul play.

Officers responded to the 9500 block of White Aspen Place Tuesday afternoon around 4:00 p.m. When officers arrived they were told that someone at the residence was burning trash and a gas can being used exploded, causing Emily to be severely burned.

A GoFundMe page for Emily has been set up, which anyone can donate to here.
