UNIVERSAL CITY, Calif. – September 15, 2015 – NBC has clinched first place for the full 52-week 2014-15 primetime ratings season in the key demographic of adults 18-49, the network’s second consecutive victory after going the prior nine seasons without a #1 finish.
In the 25-to-54 age group, NBC averaged 2.008 million viewers to ABC’s 1.858 million and CBS’ 1.381 million.
Fresh entertainment programming doesn’t begin until next week, after the Emmy Awards.
Last week, Fallon outdelivered the premiere week of CBS’s “Late Night with Stephen Colbert” by a +28% margin in adults 18-49 and topped Colbert three of four nights in 18-49 and total viewers. Its slate of such programs during the 2015-16 season is even deeper, and will include new variety series “Best Time Ever with Neil Patrick Harris”, which bows tonight, live comedy “Undateable”, original movie “Dolly Parton’s Coat of Many Colors” and “The Wiz Live!”
In addition to NBC’s season-long win in adults 18-49, the network also ranks No. 1 or tied for No. 1 for the season in adults 25-54, adults 18-34, and all key adults-male demos, according to Nielsen and the network.
The Thursday night kickoff game to the National Football League season, between Pittsburgh and New England, was seen by 27.4 million people. ABC’s “World News” was second with 7.8 million and the “CBS Evening News” had 6.3 million viewers.
Cantando. Univision’s La Banda, a new singing competition produced by Simon Cowell, opened Sunday with 2.6 million viewers, when HBO marked the returns of Project Greenlight (154,000) and Doll and Em (161,000).
Television’s fall season is already in full swing – the football season.
In an oddly compelling competition on Sunday night, AMC’s “Fear the Walking Dead” narrowly beat ABC’s coverage of the annual “Miss America” pageant, 7.2 million to 7.1 million viewers. The show bowed with a 4.9 rating on Aug. 23 and then dropped to a 4.1 with its second episode on Aug. 30.
ESPN’s college football game last Monday between national champion Ohio State and Virginia Tech was the week’s No. 3 program in 18-49 (behind the two NFL games on NBC), averaging a big 3.8 rating in 18-49 and 10.59 million viewers overall. Fox News Channel had 1.7 million, United States of America had 1.62 million, the Disney Channel had 1.55 million and HGTV had 1.43 million.
Finales. CBS’s Under the Dome ended its run with 4.2 million same-day viewers Thursday; NBC’s just-renewed Carmichael Show claimed 4.6 million Wednesday.
