The unusual weather turned Los Angeles County’s typically packed coast into empty stretches of sand when the threat of lightning forced authorities to close 70 miles of beaches Saturday.
The stern warnings came following the death of one surfer and hospitalization of seven others last summer, when a “bolt from the blue” lightning strike hit the Venice Pier and electrified both it and the surrounding ocean. An airport spokesman said the Washington D.C.-bound plane landed safely.
National Weather Service meteorologist Joe Sirard says Saturday’s rainfall broke at least 11 regional records for daily rainfall in July, including five records for any day in July. The Los Angeles County Department of Public Health recommends people avoid swimming within 100 yards of a storm drain for 72 hours after heavy rain.
LOS ANGELES (AP) – California transportation officials say the westbound side of an Interstate 10 bridge in eastern California has also been badly compromised by flooding in the same area where the eastbound side collapsed.
