A search is underway for a second Ivory Coast Special Olympics athlete who vanished near Los Angeles on Monday night, just hours after his teammate was found safe.
Shion Isimel, 15, of the Ivory Coast, was last seen around 6 a.m. walking out of a terminal, airport police spokesman Rob Pedregon said.
Gusmari last was seen about 8:30 p.m. Saturday on the USC campus, Los Angeles police officer Jack Richter said.
The 2015 Special Olympics World Games – described by organizers as the largest worldwide gathering in Los Angeles history and the biggest sporting event in the Southland since the 1984 Summer Olympics – have come to a close.
The LAPD Pacific Division has now assumed the lead in locating Isimel.
His disappearance comes after two other Special Olympics athletes were reported missing and later found. The Special Olympics issued a statement saying that all delegations had been taken to either LAX or to an area hotel.
Los Angeles County Supervisor Mark Ridley-Thomas gave the flag to Herman Kroll, president of the Austria 2017 Special Olympics Winter Games.
The team competed with 7,000 athletes from over 179 countries and won 173 medals, including 47 gold, 54 silver and 72 bronze. He also noted that in the case of both Kone and Gusmari, the athletes were in the direct care of their delegation when they went missing.
Throughout the nine days of competition, from July 25 to August 2, 2015, Special Olympics Team Canada competed in 10 different sports; athletics, basketball, bocce, bowling, golf, rhythmic gymnastics, powerlifting, soccer, softball and swimming, showcasing 114 of Canada’s best athletes to the world. “But this is real life”.
“I think he was exhausted”, Kato said.
