It is worth reminding that Microsoft wants to ensure that everyone has a great upgrade experience and thus Windows 10 is being carefully rolled out in phases, delivering Windows 10 first to its “Insiders“. Microsoft states “After October 1, a clean installation of Windows 10, the Windows 10 Enterprise 90-day Evaluation, or your former operating system will be required; and you will need to reinstall all of your programs and data”.

Windows 10 also comes with Microsoft’s virtual personal assistant, Cortana, which pops up with notifications and suggestions, and learns the user’s preferences over time. It’s the sort of thing that has got Microsoft in trouble before, forcing the company to ship a special version of Windows 7 for Europe and introduce a browser ballot screen which allows users to pick a third-party browser to replace the defaults. According to Lance Whitney in an article for c/net, “You can also grab any new Windows updates yourself rather than waiting for them to be installed”.
