Many questions still surround the moments that led up to the shooting that took the life of Memphis Police Officer Sean Bolton.

Bolton is the third police officer to be gunned down in Memphis in just over four years. He evaded police for two days, despite a warrant for his arrest on a charge of first-degree murder and a growing reward for his capture.

Armstrong said Wilbourn’s apprehension was “the first step in a very long healing process” for Bolton’s family, the Memphis Police Department and the city.

“Sadly to say, we’ve been here before”, said the director, who told reporters the incident “is just a reminder of how dangerous” the job is.

Callie Watkins told NBC News, “Tremaine ain’t no bad person”.

Bolton then got out of his auto and walked toward the Mercedes, Armstrong said. “Bang bang bang. Bang bang bang”.

In a statement released Sunday, police said a civilian had used Bolton’s radio to notify police about the shooting. He died from multiple gunshot wounds, police said.

The terms of Wilbourn’s release on the bank robbery charge were not available Sunday. Police searched the complex after the shooting, but it’s not clear exactly why.
