An off-duty MTA employee was arrested for drunk driving Sunday after he took a city bus for a booze cruise on Long Island, police said. Police say had he continued on the Northern State Parkway, the bus could have gotten stuck under an overpass.
He was awaiting arraignment Monday.
Alexander Copeland, 52, of Medford, was arrested Sunday afternoon after police received several complaints about an erratic bus heading east on the Northern State Parkway. Copeland had a blood alcohol level of 0.20 percent, more than twice the legal standard of.08 percent, according to State Police. Copeland is charged with reckless endangerment and aggravated DWI.
Ortiz also said Copeland has been suspended without pay with additional disciplinary action forthcoming. Bus drivers, like everyone else on the road, are humans who are liable to commit the occasional (or frequent!) extremely bad decision, as Alexander Copeland’s case shows. Ortiz said the MTA bought property in the area and plans on building a new depot that will be able to house all the buses when they’re not in use.
