With West Bengal government moving ahead to declassify 64 files on Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose, union Urban Development Minister Venkaiah Naidu today said the central government is yet to assess its impact on worldwide relations. “People must know about Netaji”, said Mamata Banerjee at state secretariat Nabanno located in Kolkata twin Howrah district.
“In order to provide the benefits to state government employees, we will form a Group of Ministers, who will be led by Finance Minister Amit Mitra, for coordination with staffers”, Banerjee said.
“We have been demanding the declassification of the files for a long time”. Netaji’s grand-nephew Abhijit Ray feels a team of researchers, journalists and Bose family members should go through the files. Contents from two of these files became public this April, triggering a sensation and giving credence to the belief that Netaji was alive till then. “We will slowly undertake the process of digitisation of all files from 1937-1947”. I fully endorse it. The centre should follow and reveal the contents of the files in its possession.
Recently, some files relating to Bose, declassified by the central government, had revealed that the Ministry of Home Affairs had snooped on at least two of Netaji’s nephews.
The BJP government, when in Opposition, had demanded the files be declassified but has now refrained from doing so on the grounds that such a move could jeopardize India’s relations with the worldwide community.
Chandra Bose, the grandnephew of the late freedom fighter, on Sunday said that the PMO has asked them to submit a list of those wanting to meet the Prime Minister.
– Disputing the government’s version, Netaji’s family insisted that an intrinsic probe should be made to trace the disappearance of Netaji. “The entire country is impatient to know how Netaji died and under what circumstances”, Rajnath Singh had said on the eve of Netaji’s 117th birth anniversary on 23 January, 2014.
