Madeline Stuart, the renowned Brisbane model with Down syndrome, will strut the catwalk at New York Fashion Week. She is the first ever model with Down syndrome who scored two NYFW campaigns: one with Manifesta, an athletic wear company and another with everMaya, an eco-handbag company who chose Madeline’s face as their brand new image. Since then, the 18-year-old has landed a number of modeling contracts.
Stuart was already on a fitness kick by eating well, dancing, swimming and cheerleading. Professional photographs taken of her spread like wild fire soon after being posted. EverMaya is donating 5 percent of sales of every “Madeline” handbag to the National Down Syndrome Society.
“Working with Madeline is such a positive experience”, EverMaya president Damian Graybelle tells the Daily News.
Stuart is hoping her exposure will change some opinions about the diseases and other disabilities, by creating awareness and inclusion.
FTL MODA was also very excited to announce the exciting news on their Facebook page.
While Madeline appears to be on her road to fame, her mother says she is still an average teen that plays sports, hangs out with friends and chills on the iPad. There’s even a Change.org petition with more than 1,800 supporters to get her on the cover of People magazine.
Check out some of her most high fashion Instagram photos to date. I think that’s why she’s done so well, is because this isn’t about us.
“I want to inspire… young women and men to love their inner beauty and to realise with time that inner beauty and compassion is all that lasts and is what people really see us for”, she wrote on her Facebook page. “I trust that doesn’t sound excessively inflated”.
She’s making a name for herself and has become instantly popular on social media over the past few months. Rosanne said that her daughter’s career is not just about taking pictures. For New York Fashion Week, the brand has teamed up with the Christopher and Dana Reeve Foundation to prove that “fashion is free from confines.”
