After an emotional week for Formula 1 following the death of driver Jules Bianchi, the Hungarian Grand Prix provided the best race of the season so far and a win for Sebastian Vettel of Ferrari, who dedicated his triumph to the French driver.
With yesterday’s win, his first in Hungary, Vettel equals late triple champion Ayrton Senna’s haul of 41 victories and moves up to joint third with the Brazilian in the all time list of GP winners, trailing only boyhood hero Michael Schumacher and Alain Prost.
Starting from pole position, Hamilton’s race went from bad to worse before ending with an unexpected bonus as he extended his championship leader over Rosberg in freaky circumstances.
It meant an easier final few laps for Vettel, while Daniil Kvyat finished second for his first podium, followed by his Red Bull team-mate, Ricciardo.
Both Hamilton and Rosberg were slow off the start-line and Vettel, who started from third, went toe-to-toe with Hamilton on the run down to turn one before taking the lead and he never looked back.
“I owe my race to Jules”, Ricciardo said after his first podium finish this season.
“Yes, an incredible day, but this victory is for Jules”, said Vettel, mindful the Frenchman’s family were in attendance.
The stewards took no further action this time, with Kvyat suddenly finding himself second, ahead of Ricciardo, who was forced to pit for a new front wing. After the drive-through penalty, he was 15th.
Ricciardo and Rosberg’s misfortune bumped Red Bull’s Danil Kyvat up to second and gave the Russian his first-ever podium. Even after Rosberg’s issue, he ended up gaining only four points in the championship hunt.
Jonathan McEvoy, the Daily Mail correspondent, said Hamilton’s driving belonged in an episode of “Wacky Races”, while Mercedes’ Lauda agreed that the Briton had been “too aggressive”. All I can do is apologize to the team and work hard to make amends at the next race. Rosberg felt defeated also for not being able to get his chance to make up for his gap with his teammate in the F1 Driver Standings. Rosberg drove underneath Ricciardo to retake the position, but as he cut across the track Rosberg’s rear tire made contact with Ricciardo’s front wing, causing the tire to be cut.
“The start wasn’t actually that tricky”, Hamilton said, ” but the Ferraris and whoever was behind obviously got a good start. Earlier in the race, Maldonado had also served another drive through for a collision with Sergio Perez, so it was right there with the most atrocious performances in Grand Prix racing history.
“To come away knowing this was one of the worst performances I’ve put in for a long, long time…”
In the 64th lap Ricciardo hit Rosberg.
Penalty points on a driver’s super licence do not have any direct effect unless they accumlate 12 points in a 12 months period, which may result in a one-race ban from driving.
