Chris Buescher had everything he needed to win Friday night’s Food City 300 at Bristol (Tenn.) Motor Speedway. It would secure the win for the driver of the No. 54 Toyota.
It was Busch’s eighth career Xfinity victory at Bristol and also continued his strong showing across all three of NASCAR’s national series this summer. Busch started second in the lineup and led 89 laps of the 302-lap race. “I wasn’t sure if they were going to make it on fuel and obviously, they cut it close, a little too close”. “It was fun. I was trying and giving it everything I had, we were just fortunate it worked out for us”, said Busch.
Buescher sputtered as numerous cars passed him on the restart and he finished 11th.
Kyle Larson finished second in the race, pole-winner Denny Hamlin was third and Dillon fourth.
Chris Buescher led the Food City 300 when the eighth caution, with five laps left, set up a green-white-checkered finish.
The win Friday night was the 73rd series victory for Busch, who holds the record for most wins in NASCAR’s second tier series.
Daniel Suarez, who finished fifth, won the $100,000 Dash4Cash bonus among the four eligible drivers. When I would go to the gas, the engine would stumble and stall out and then the tires would spin. “I mean, he was fast and did a really good job”, Busch said.
“I just ran out of fuel, just lost the fuel pick-up”, said a dejected Buescher afterwards.
The finish cut into Buescher’s points lead over Dillon.
Brian Scott, Elliott, Kevin Harvick, Regan Smith and Brendan Gaughan, all in Chevrolets, rounded out the top 10.
Elliott Sadler sits 82 points behind Buescher in fifth place in the standings. At the time, Sadler was running 13th.
