Despite habitually building cars that produce well over 1,300 horsepower and can theoretically smash past 250 miles per hour with the ease of a Saturn 5 rocket, Koenigsegg CEO Christian von Koenigsegg says top speed isn’t necessarily a priority for the company. Whether this auto earns the title of world’s fastest supercar doesn’t particularly concern him.
And a recent post on the Koenigsegg website-done in the spirit of Reddit’s “Ask Me Anything”-lays out the reasoning behind his lack of enthusiasm”. “Our customers are generally far more interested in driving excitement, usability and overall performance than outright top speed that is impossible to reach unless one has access to a closed 10km straight”.
The Koenigsegg One:1 is the current astounding hypercar king, with 1,340 horses and a theoretical top speed of 273 miles per hour. The company founder went on to point out three key factors dissuading the marque from attempting production auto top speed records. Additionally, Koenigsegg hasn’t found an airfield long enough to max out its current vehicles.
In addition, a proper venue to do top-speed testing is tough to find and, currently, the safest spot is Volkswagen’s Ehra-Lessien test track, but it’s not feasible considering Bugatti, which is owned by the Volkswagen Group, owns the record.
Koenigsegg wouldn’t comment on whether it is necessary for carmakers to test the top speeds of their products, or whether such endeavors are purely marketing exercises. Finally, the fact that the Swedish automaker is still a small company, it believes its resources can be better spent on ensuring its cars are as enjoyable to drive as possible.
Of course, Koenigsegg also took the opportunity to highlight the One: 1’s outrageous 0-186-0 time of 17.95 seconds, which crushes its competitors.
