Over the past few years Kanye has been making headlines with his controversial speeches at rap concerts pointing out racism and a music industry that oppresses artists. But tonight, all of that was buried in the past. This year she was given the honor of awarding West with the Michael Jackson Video Vanguard award.

As Kanye took to the stage, he discussed grocery stores, baseball stadiums and awards shows, admitting that he “rolled up a little something” prior to the show, before telling fans of his presidency plans. The highlight of of West’s speech, though, was his announcement of his presidential run in 2020. “If I had a daughter at that time would I have went on stage and grabbed the mike from someone else?” I’ve been conflicted, bro!

White House Press Secretary Josh Earnest has a policy of not commenting on the candidacies – or possible candidacies – of people who want to be president. And bro – Justin I’m not trying to put you on blast but I saw that man in tears, bro.

“I met Kanye West six years ago at this show, actually”, Swift said.

“Do you know how many times they announced that Taylor was going to give me that award ‘cuz it got them more ratings?” he said.

“I’m just happy that in 2015, we live in a world where boys can play princesses and girls can play soldiers”, she said while accepting the big honor. “I [took] the edge off”.

West dropped some hints about his campaign themes in his VMA speech, saying, “I don’t know what I stand to lose after this”.

“Imma let you finish, but Kanye West had one of the greatest careers of all time”, she smiled.

On the subject of his interruption of Swift way back in 2009, West said he’s definitely thought about that moment, wondering if he would have done anything differently.
