After suffering a severe head injury at Pocono raceway, IndyCar announced that 37-year-old Justin Wilson died Monday. Last year, James Hinchcliffe was hospitalized and diagnosed with a concussion after being struck in the head with debris, actually from a auto driven by Wilson. During the race, leader Sage Karem hit the wall and sent pieces of his vehicle across the track during the collision.
IndyCar driver Justin Wilson is altering lives in death.
“This is a monumentally sad day for Indycar and the motor sports community as a whole” said Mark Miles, the CEO of Hulman & Co.
Wilson’s brother Stefan posted a tweet Tuesday indicating his brother’s status as an organ donor helped save six lives.
“Justin was a loving father and devoted husband, as well as a highly competitive racing driver who was respected by his peers”, Wilson’s family said in a statement.
Other drivers paid tribute to Wilson’s personal qualities. “All of our thoughts and prayers are for his wife, Julia, daughters Jane and Jessica; his parents Keith and Lynne; his brother Stefan; and his many friends around the world”.
US auto-racing legend Eddie Cheever said Wilson’s death should lead to a thorough analysis of safety measures in the sport, while acknowledging the freak nature of Sunday’s accident.
Wilson was 37. He is survived by wife Julia and two daughters.
“I am so devastated to hear of another passing of a great man and driver”.
Wilson’s death is the first on-track fatality in the IndyCar series since Dan Wheldon was killed during the final race of the 2011 season at Las Vegas. “We have not only lost a fast driver, but also a good person”. While there has been no official comment from IndyCar yet, Wilson’s team mate Ryan Hunter-Reay who completed and won the race said, “We’re always looking at ways to make this sport safer.” Stefan Wilson is also an IndyCar driver, and he is in deep mourning for the loss of his “best friend … role model and mentor”, who died Monday after being injured during a race on Sunday.
