Multiplex powerhouse Jurassic World has become only the fourth film to clear $1 billion outside of America, joining this year’s Furious 7 along with James Cameron’s one-two punch of Avatar and Titanic. That compares to $2.03 billion for Avatar (2009), $1.53 billion for Titanic (1997) and $1.16 billion for Furious 7, released in April 2015. If you deduct all of the money that Jurassic earned in the United States from its total gross, the dino-sized sequel still could claim it passed the $1 billion mark and that distinction puts it into some rarified air.

Jurassic World is also #2 on the 3D movie Box Office chart, just behind Avatar. Last month, Universal surpassed the industry record set by Fox in 2015 with $5.53 billion.

Jurassic World is the one movie in the line of hits for Universal, a wholly-owned unit of Comcast Corp. It also holds the record for the fastest any film has crossed $1 billion worldwide, needing only 13 days.

Universal announced on Sunday that the studio had crossed $6 billion in global box office receipts, which includes $2.157 billion domestically and $3.886 internationally.

Duncan Clark, president of distribution for Universal Pictures worldwide, said the reason behind “Jurassic World’s” success is “exceptional word of mouth”.

Directed by Colin Trevorrow, it stars Chris Pratt and Bryce Dallas Howard. Thats because Trevorrows blockbuster has raced past the $646-million mark in domestic tickets sold, making it the highest grossing USA film released so far this year.
