Jamaica beats Haiti 1-0, will play US in Gold Cup semifinal

Jamaica’s Reggae Boyz clipped Haiti 1-0 in their quarter-final encounter to book their spot in the semis of CONCACAF Gold Cup at the M&T Bank Stadium here on Saturday.

Jamaica will now meet the USA in the semi-finals at the Georgia Dome in Atlanta on Wednesday.

Haiti defied the odds to advance to the quarter-finals as runners-up behind defending champions and tournaments hosts United States in Group A.

Jamaica forward Giles Barnes, left, celebrates his goal with Adrian Mariappa, right, against the Haiti during the first half of a CONCACAF Gold Cup soccer quarterfinal match, Saturday, July 18, 2015, in Baltimore.

“They’re two teams that are very different in their approach”.

The Jamaicans scored the only goal in the seventh minute.

There were four changes to Jamaica’s starting XI following their win over El Salvador, with Ryan Thompson, Michael Hector, Joel Grant and Simon Dawkins named ahead of Dwayne Miller (injured), Jermaine Taylor, Je-Vaughn Watson and Darren Mattocks (suspended). Rodolph Austin crossed the ball to the Houston Dynamo man at the near post, where the English-born attacker controlled the ball and finished past goalkeeper Johny Placide from an extremely tight angle.

The Haitians pushed the tempo and had several good opportunities to score, coming closest to an equaliser at the 24th minute when Duckens Nazon hit a low shot from the top of the penalty box against the base of the upright.

Jamaica were not without their chances as striker Dawkins saw his effort flash wide of the post just past the half-hour mark.
