Maiden are back in 2015, and with a video as immediately memorable and iconic for future generations as this, they’ve done so with a huge amount of style. Written by singer Bruce Dickinson and Adrian Smith-a partnership that in the past yielded such classics as “2 Minutes to Midnight” and “Flight of Icarus”-it’s a roaring speedster of a track with blazing energy and a tour-de-force vocal performance by Dickinson“. They don’t seem to flow very well, reminding me a little of something perhaps from the experimental A Matter of Life and Death. In a statement, the band said that the clip “is a “homage” to four decades of video gaming, juxtaposed alongside Iron Maiden’s 40 years of incredible visuals centering on their talisman, Eddie, as he travels through space & time to complete his Herculean task”.
Beyond this, the band revisited favorite subjects like the horrors of war (“Mother of Mercy”), religion’s empty promises (“Starblind”), mysteries both scientific and occult (“The Alchemist”) and apocalyptic visions (“When the Wild Wind Blows”). It was recorded in Paris with their longstanding producer Kevin “Caveman” Shirley in late 2014, with the finishing touches added earlier this year.
The double album is their 16th full-length record, which will be released on September 4. As you’ll see, the guy, Killers axe and all, is accidentally sucked into the digital world, and is forced to fight his way through various gamer motifs.
