There are some key changes in this year’s federal election that voters should be aware of.

Since children don’t vote, said Shanequa Levin, director of Every Child Matters, it is important that their parents and people who care about children’s issues do register.

The University of Winnipeg Students’ Association has teamed up with Elections Canada to help as many students as possible get registered as voters.

Registration forms can be completed in the registrar’s office and voters are encouraged to pick up mail at local city halls, banks and libraries. Electors whose card contains an error in the name and who can not go online should contact the Elections Canada office in their electoral district.

The personalized voter information cards mailed to each registered voter gives information on when and where to vote and indicate the accessibility of their polling station.

Another change in this federal election is the opportunity for a fourth advance polling day on the Sunday of the advance polling weekend.

Voter information cards will no longer be accepted in lieu of identification at the polls.

The ballots must be received by the County Election Board by 7 p.m election day, October 13, in order to be counted, according to the release. “With a special ballot, an elector can vote by mail or in person at the office of any returning officer”.

Only 38.8 per cent of Canadians between the ages of 18 and 24 voted in 2011, according to Elections Canada.

Even more will be sent over the next 10 days.
