There’s IoT Foundation, which allows two companies to store and share their data securely, and Node-RED, a graphical user interface for Internet of Things programming.
IBM has formally established an Internet of Things (IoT) business unit, establishing Harriet Green, former chief executive of Cambridgeshire-based Thomas Cook Group, as its general manager. The company had previously announced that it would be investing $3 billion in IoT over the next four years, and the plan is for the unit to comprise of more than 2,000 researchers and developers, working with IBM analytics and cloud services.
Green, who recently culminated her tenure as CEO of Thomas Cook Group, will take the role of vice president and general manager of both new IBM units.
In a separate announcement, IBM has launched a new cloud service which the company hopes will integrate actionable insights to identify potential maintenance issues before there’s a fault, as well as real-time diagnostics and intelligent navigation.
Strategic initiatives with ARM and Apple show IBM is focusing on solutions development, with analytics a major component, Monteros said.
IBM says the automotive solution, available on IBM Cloud’s SoftLayer infrastructure, “provides driver, vehicle and environmental insights through analytics” by tapping vehicle sensors and geolocation data collected in cars. “This will empower companies of any size with a productivity tool that can readily transform how they operate, and the services they can offer”.
According to Telefonica’s 2014 Connected auto Industry Report, the connected auto – a vehicle networked to the Internet in some way – will achieve mass-market penetration in the next few years and the overall number of vehicles with built-in connectivity will increase from 10 percent of the overall market in 2014 to 90 percent by 2020. For example, we could see the triggering of an alarm message on a washing machine to ask the owner to confirm a breakdown engineer appointment if a fault is detected.
“I’m honored to join IBM and to become part of a team that is shaping this exciting and transformative moment for industries”, said Ms. Green.
