Refugees will face “the strongest possible action” if they enter Hungary illegally, an ad in Lebanese newspaper An-Nahar read Monday.
This afternoon Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban followed up the adverts with incendiary language, insisting that Europe’s borders are threatened by the refugees, who he claimed were “breaking down the doors”. He subsequently granted the Hungarian army additional powers to deal with the crisis.
Hungary closed its borders with Serbia last week to try to halt the movement of refugees and migrants through its territory.
The right-wing government in Budapest has already built a razor-wire barrier along much of its border with Croatia, after sealing off its frontier with Serbia in a bid to keep migrants out. In Jordan, which has a population of 8 million, there are now 800,000 refugees registered there, the news agency adds.
Lebanon, a country of four million people, is hosting more than 1.1 million Syrian refugees who have fled the almost five-year war across the border. Education Minister Elias Bou Saab said this will give more refugee children a chance at free education.
People fleeing violence and poverty in the Middle East, Asia and Africa are rushing from one European border to the next as they desperately try to find a way north. The majority of those arriving on the shores of Europe are Syrians.
Earlier this month, Denmark’s Ministry of Immigration, Integration and Housing posted advertisements in Lebanese newspapers aiming to deter migrants, saying that the Scandinavian nation has reduced social aid to migrants by 50 percent recently.
It warned that migrants whose applications were rejected would be deported immediately. The figure is double the number of refugees who were able to enroll a year ago.
The result is that more than 16,000 migrants have crossed into Hungary from Croatia since Friday.Meanwhile the United Kingdom government yesterday announced that Syrian refugees will be brought to Britain more swiftly under a fresh push to tackle the growing crisis.
