Hayward police sergeant shot during traffic stop

A San Francisco Bay Area police sergeant was shot and killed during an early morning traffic stop Wednesday, and authorities say the shooter hasn’t been arrested. Hayward police Sgt. Scott Lunger, a 15-year veteran of the department, was shot at about 3:15 a.m. after he and another officer pulled over a truck being driven erratically near Myrtle and Lion streets, police Capt. Mark Koller said at a news conference. According to the Los Angeles Times, the gunman opened fire as Lunger approached the stopped vehicle, striking and mortally wounding the officer.

As stated by a review of dispatcher reports, officers called in a license plate because a truck was “swerving all over the road”.

Sources confirmed to KPIX 5 that he died, but police have not publicly confirmed this information or released a name. Koller described Sgt. Lunger as an “ideal” officer.

The sergeant was taken to Eden Medical Center in Castro Valley. Neighbors said they heard at least four shots fired.

“The loss is obviously devastating to Sergeant Lunger’s family, and it is also a blow to HPD and the entire Hayward Community”. “Scott loved his job. It is a tragedy that this has happened, that someone has done thos but we are pulling together as an organization”. Meanwhile, local law enforcement agencies have been sending their condolences through social media. “We’re all mourning”, she said, her voice cracking.
