It took three years and the departure of a divisive president for the Georgia Board of Regents to correct their mistake and give our university the name it deserved all along – Augusta University. The name Georgia Regents College was selected, upsetting many within the Augusta area.
The regents search committee will be chaired by regent Lori Durden and will include Board of Regents Chairman Neil Pruitt. The name change, he said, will help establish the strong and necessary partnership between the community and school.
The research institution’s name change to Augusta University is effective immediately.
“The new name Augusta University builds on the momentum we have with President Brooks Keel’s leadership”.
Huckaby said Augusta civic leaders promised to raise funds to pay for the sign changes.
Hoping to build on its budget, Georgia’s Board of Regents meets today to crunch the numbers for the upcoming year.
Keel graduated from Augusta College, which later became Augusta State University, and earned a doctorate from the Medical College of Georgia.
